Read my review of Nightwish's new album

Nightwish have had quite a time the last couple years.  From a high profile, media centered break up with their former lead singer Tarja Turunen to launching a planet Earth wide search for the next vocalist, going through thousands of application submission for the singing job, picking their new singer Annette Olzon, and writing and recording their best album to date.

Yes that’s right, I said it.  Dark Passion Play is by far Nightwish’s best album.  The album has so many things going for it it’s hard to pick out which things to review.

I’ll start with the question everyone wants to know.  How is Annette compared to Tarja?  My answer for this is that she isn’t an opera singer by any stretch of the imagination.  She does not have the vocal range or voice of Tarja.  But, for some reason, her voice fits the music far better then Tarja’s does.  I know this is a controversial statement, but I do believe it.  Annette fits very well with the band, far better then Tarja ever did.  Her voice is a part of the music, unlike Tarja’s whose voice was over the music and really the center of attention on the past albums.  This album is all about the sound, and Annette’s voice fits right in.

The lyrics in the music are great as always.  Tuomas continues to improve as a lyricist as time goes on.  A great deal of poetry is in the music and it’s great to listen to.  The musicianship is also great.  However, this album is not as orchestral centric as Once was.  There are some massive orchestra pieces in it, but the songs that really stick out in this album the best are the one’s that sound like good old fashion power metal songs.  In fact I would probably say that this album is far more power metal then symphonic metal (again not to say that there aren’t a few massive symphony songs on the album).

With all of that in mind, I have to say that this album is definitely worth the money.  So go buy it!
