Edguy's Newest Album Reviewed

Edguy is back with a bang.  Although it’s not so much a power metal bang, as it is a hard rocking, classic metal bang.

Formally, Edguy was pretty much the perfect example of German power metal band, but with their newest effort things are a bit different.  The album is very very good, but I wouldn’t exactly classify it as power metal.  There are a couple power metal songs on the album (Sacrifice, The Asylum), but overall the feel of this album is that of classic metal.  It’s sort of like a cross of styles between Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Queensryche, and a pop hair metal band.  This isn’t bad though.  Edguy is a very talented band, and they actually pull off what they’re aiming for very successfully.  The album is great to listen to, very catchy, and even popish at some points.

The musicianship on the album is very diverse with lots of different ebs and flows.  Some songs are chord driven, some are bass driven, some are even driven by keyboards.  There are slow songs, there are fast songs, there are mid-tempo songs.  This album has it all.

The lyrics in the songs are just as diverse as the music is.  Ranging from topics of love, to self exploration, to funny songs that Edguy is famous for.  What this album is lacking is the fantasy inspired lyrics that were so common in Edguy’s last albums.  However, not have the fantasy lyrics there isn’t so much a bad thing, it’s just different.  The lyrics are ultimately appropriate for the new sound of the music.

The more I listen to Edguy the more they impress me.  Every album they release seems to be better then the last.  Except I wouldn’t say that this album is better then “Hellfire Club,” it’s really just different.  I’d say it’s just about as good as “Hellfire Club,” but it’s just not power metal.

So be warned: this is a great album, but it’s not how Edguy have ever sounded before.
