Read my review of Unreal Tournament 3

Fun is fun.  And that’s all I can really say about Unreal Tournament 3.  It’s a lot of fun.  Everything in the game has basically been designed with this idea in mind: “will this be fun to do?”  And when it comes to Unreal Tournament 3, the answer is, yes.  It is a lot of fun.

The online deathmatch franchise is back again, and this time it’s pretty as hell.  The graphics on the game are great.  Unreal runs off of the same engine that Gears of War runs off of, so if you are familiar with that game, you’ll have an idea how this game is going to look.  All of the guns have lots of dynamic moving parts, lots of things explode, and the environments are fun to be in.  The Unreal team has done a very good job at matching graphics to the gameplay.

The sound on the game is great, but probably it’s weakest point.  While there are lots of good bangs and screams, the game does what a lot of other shooters do, in that the weapons that the noises make just don’t seem to be loud or realistic enough for me.  Maybe it’s my speakers, but the various ray guns, just don’t sound as impressive as I had hoped.  That being said, the sound is fine.

The gameplay, of course, is the best part of Unreal 3.  A lot of things have been carried over from 2004, which is actually ok.  It worked then, and it still works really well now.  The types of fighting matches in the game are great to.  Ranging from straight deathmatch, to vehicle warfare, to team deathmatch, where  you can put on your own war simulations.  The game does a very good job of scale to, so that when your in a vehicle, you feel much larger and more powerful then the little ant sized soldiers running around.  It almost gives you a starcraft-esq feel, except you get to be on of the little soldiers running around if you want to.  It’s very cool.  The game of course, simply must be played online.  It’s all about the online killing, and the pelvic thrusts.

Overall, Unreal Tournament is a great fun game.  It’s worth your money.
